Dar At-Ta’awan were grateful to partner with Sylvana Paternite, a registered nurse, who conducted an awareness raising workshop with Turkmen women in Sahab (southeast Amman) on Friday 26th September. The topic of women’s health was chosen due to an identified need within the female Turkmen community for information surrounding health and wellbeing. This is often not addressed within the community due to taboos and stigmas attached to it, and we are extremely grateful for the work of Sylvana who has been helping Turkmen women in the community for a long time, providing her with essential rapport and trust for this workshop.

During this session, which lasted around 1.5 hours, Sylvana discussed essential women’s health topics with the community. This included information such as the importance of healthy nutrition and considerations for pregnancy and each trimester.

Around a dozen women attended, most of whom have either been pregnant or are currently pregnant. The session was conducted in Arabic and took a community-focused, interactive approach, which utilized questions & answers, group work, and visual aids such as pictures of different types of foods to enhance the accessibility of the session. We were grateful to receive a very positive response with participants stating that it was "very nice" and "helpful".
